About S.A.M

Start Again Monday, more commonly referred to as Sam, started off originally as just a simple phrase made up by myself and one of my very dear friends one weekday evening while drinking. Having both already made a pact that we would both go on a detox just days before, however both failing to do so due to one reason or another, resulting in us both hitting the bottle to wash the stresses of what that day brought to us both, while living our separate lives.

Hence the phrase, Start Again Monday aka Sam. Sam became more of a regular choice of word to use, regardless of what day it was; sometimes it could even be a Monday that we were saying, Start Again Monday. Sam would eventually come to be mentioned more and more, regardless of what we were even doing, be that drinking, attempting to stop smoking, pushing back that planned diet, delaying some often serious life admin, or even at times partaking in narcotics. Sam became such a regular choice of word to use that we even went as far as having S.A.M. tattooed on our arms.

As time went on, the term Start Again Monday made itself clear to us both independently, that although we can aim to start afresh each Monday, waiting for Monday to come back around to start afresh was at times too long a wait. Both eventually realizing that each day is a new day, a fresh start, a new beginning, a new day that we will only ever get to live just that once. So although we both still often refer to Sam as starting a fresh new week with new challenges to face, jobs to be completed, or even unexpected hurdles to jump, we are both more so very aware that each day is a new day. Be that a Wednesday, Friday, or even a Sunday.

Time is precious. Minutes turn into hours, then into days, followed by weeks, months, and then years. On Tuesday the 20th of February 2024, it was uncertain if I’d ever be able to Start Again Monday, let alone another day.
